
JOB TITLE: School-Based Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse
LOCATION: High School-Based Wellness Centers, On-Site
SCHEDULE/HOURS: Part-Time, 8:30AM-3:00PM, average 24hours week
DURATION: 10-Month position (August 4th-June 2026)
REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate from an accredited school, with at least an Associate’s Degree in Healthcare Related Field, and/or Medical Assistant Certification or Licensed Practical Nurse licensure; special consideration given to those with experience working with pediatric/adolescent patients and their families and their human services needs;
OR
- An equivalent combination education and experience. Preferred: 1-2 years experience in outpatient clinical setting with pediatric population.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:
- BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
- Current and active certification as a medical assistant or licensed practical nurse by one of the following: American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA).
- Valid Driver’s License
POSITION INFORMATION:
This is a 10 month, part-time position working 24 hours per week. High School-Based CMA or LPN will primarily work at two of the four NHCS high school- based clinics (Hoggard, Laney, Ashley, and New Hanover) and must be willing to travel between clinical sites. A typical work week schedule is 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM, four days per week during the school year (mid-August to mid-June), with time off during the school holidays/breaks and summer months.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The High School-Based CMA or LPN provides professional assistance and team-based patient care as directed by the School-based Wellness Centers’ Providers (PAs/NPs). This position provides clinical support to the providers regarding all aspects of the registration and scheduling process for patient visits, including telehealth visits, to facilitate positive patient experiences. This position also provides professional customer service to patients and their parents/guardians and assists with communicating with school staff regarding enrollment process and returning students to classroom or to office for dismissal. Day-to-day functions include connecting patients via telehealth with the provider, clinical documentation, vital signs, immunization administration, collecting and running laboratory tests, and preparing and sending out laboratory orders.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSIFICATION:
- Responsible for providing medical assistance to individuals served within the school-based clinical setting
- Provides instructions to patients and/or parents on video telehealth visits, technical requirements, and assist with any patient/parent questions
- Answers basic patient/parent questions on what to expect for a video telehealth visit with provider
- Operation of virtual telehealth visit device and Bluetooth peripherals (training of equipment provided)
- Maintains and cleans virtual visit device and equipment after each patient
- Requires interviewing patients to acquire medical history and basic health assessment, including obtaining vital signs
- Conducts point-of-care testing (i.e. strep/flu/COVID testing, urinalysis, fingerstick blood glucose and/or hemoglobin, etc). as ordered by provider
- Collects and prepares lab specimens as ordered by provider
- Organizes, prioritizes, and monitors daily work activity to ensure that complete and accurate registration/documentation has been performed in a timely manner
- Assists with securing parental or legal guardian consent for services received at the school-based clinics
- Conducts and maintains inventory of clinical and office supplies
- Provides education to school staff and parents/guardians on services provided at the school-based clinics
- Assists provider in management of medical records for patients who receive services.
- Ensures standards of quality delivery of medical services and infection control.
- Coordinates medical care and schedules patient appointments.
- May be exposed to human body fluids and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens.

- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently of constantly to lift objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to perform extensive reading and determine the accuracy of work assigned.
